If you want to flash nand, you have to use Flash Tool and you need a .zip image;
if you want to flash a multiboot partition, you have to use Image Install Wizard and you need a .tar.gz image.

An USB image is an os (so a piece of software) which runs from an external drive (HDD, flashpen, another external USB device, SSD, ...) - so not from the internal flash of your box. On the flash memory of your box another os is running and bootable (maybe the old original or another e2,... image)
This type of image is called USB IMAGE.

If you flash a new software to your box you do this in most cases via flashpen (USB device) - but still: the firmware (so the os) gets copied to your flash memory of the box. This type of image is called FLASH IMAGE.

Some boxes only support e2 images as being USB images - this is because the flash memory of your receiver is too small that a modern e2 fits into - therefor it must be installed externally. The booting environment of your box is responsable of either starting the internal flash image or the external USB image.

Subsequently clever guys developed software which allows you to:

use a flash image
install one or more external, so-called USB images
and let the user choose which image to use...
(so more completely different images can be run on one single box)

... this we call MULTIBOOT

How to distinguish?
well, have a look into our image download section - choose spark7162 (because there we have both kind of images)
you find some with the ending:

_USB.tar.gz: this is the USB image which can be booted from an external device, and:
_Flash.zip: the flash image (usually this zip file gets extracted and copied on a flashpen to be installed on the box

So you can see: .tar.gz for USB images, .zip for the flash images

@MAT: as already explained: use the Flash tab for installing (flashing) flash images and the USB/MB (MB stands for multiboot) for the USB images. In both case don't extract the archive content - just use the downloaded file.

I know there are some other formats of different (very special boxes) - but this would stretch the point at the moment ;)
