i dont know where it is going wrong it sounds like the drive isnt being detected at boot but then adds it as second drive (sdb) when disconnecting and re-connecting after the box has booted
i could ftp to sdb2,3 & 4 but dont have the boot options to start from them.
sorry again for burdening you with this and thank you for your patience

the problem seems to be that the disk isnt being mounted in /mnt/usb upon reboot.
when it is disconnected and re-connected it appears as
/dev/sdb1 on /mnt/usb/usb0 type ext2 (rw,sync)
/dev/sdb2 on /mnt/usb/usb1 type ext2 (rw,sync)
/dev/sdb3 on /mnt/usb/usb2 type ext2 (rw,sync)
/dev/sdb4 on /mnt/usb/usb3 type ext2 (rw,sync)
i think the partitions are fine as per this readout from disk utility tool.
here is also serial bootlog
thanks

i think i am sorted now
i booted the box without usb so it wasnt being seen as sda2.
when i then connected it it was correctly recognised as sda1,sda2,sda3 &sda4 in mnt/usb/usb0, mnt/usb/usb1,mnt/usb/usb2 & mnt/usb/usb3.
i then installed
pkt svn 1843 to sda2
bpanther neutrino 4536 to sda3
hdmu 1233 to sda4
so i am now goint to see which one is best foe epg and recording function and also which has option for scart out to 2nd tv
many thanks to santa for helping me get this far
